Toward the end of 2024, we got back to working on the MEVISYS platform. Having moved on from the Embedded Linux architecture, we shifted our focus to a new technical solution that has much stronger economic potential and, more importantly, is simple enough for our small team to realistically bring to life.

We also began focusing much more intensely on the security of the entire solution. These considerations led to a major shift in our architectural logic. Now, all core business logic lives on the server. At the installation site, we deployed a relatively simple — and therefore cheaper — hardware unit. There is no longer any need to program the device; instead the logic lives on the server.

To keep things simple, we started with the MQTT protocol, which is currently arguably the most widely adopted protocol for data acquisition. It boasts extensive support both on the hardware device side and the server side.

Economic shifts have created a situation where developer labor is becoming the dominant cost driver of any solution. Today, it is far more cost-effective for companies to buy an off-the-shelf product than to fund a custom development — even if that product doesn’t check every single box on their wishlist. For this very reason, we decided to expand our platform with a turnkey solution that we can offer either as a managed service (SaaS) or for on-premise installation on the customer’s own server.

Therefore, in this regard as well, we have completely flipped our approach. Our original idea was to prepare and showcase potential frameworks that we could then offer to clients for building custom applications tailored to their needs. Our new mindset is to have a ready-made product that we can simply tweak or customize based on the client’s specific requirements whenever necessary.

This shift in strategy also directly impacted how we approach each component of our server solution — from secure communication and databases to the frontend and backend. We are no longer scouting and testing every single interesting framework out there to weigh its pros and cons. Instead, we are selecting one specific combination to serve as the core foundation of our ready-made product.

Details regarding the selection of each individual component are covered in upcoming posts on our blog.

Our current tech stack:

  • Secure communication – WireGuard
  • MQTT Broker – Mosquitto
  • Configuration database – SQLite
  • Measurement database – VictoriaMetrics
  • Backend – Rust
  • Frontend – Vue
